After-school care for primary school autistic boy
by Mariam • Lewisham
Looking for after school pick-up from local School (around 3.15pm) and 3 hours of care (until 6:15pm) for our 4yo autistic son. He is a very happy and active boy who is easily entertained.
We would like someone to do pick and take him in the community after school, where there are lots of activities he enjoys within easy walking distance (all within half a mile) from the school, such as the local park, soft play, library or swimming. In the winter, we are happy for carers to take him home and do activities in our home as well, as we live within this half mile area.
His care needs are relatively simple, as he enjoys chatting with his carers, is happy to hold hands and walk places, loves to run around in the park or soft play, or read and have hot chocolate at cafes. His main care needs are around toileting (he is still in nappies), and ensuring his safety while he is out, as he has some challenges in understanding danger, but this has been improving rapidly over the course of this year. He is receptive to new carers looking after him and many report his lovable nature.
We are looking for someone who is warm, patient and has experience looking after primary school age autistic children. Our main priority is for our son to spend quality time during the after-school hours with someone who is interested in his well-being and development. An understanding of the needs of autistic children is a must!

We are seeking a reliable and attentive carer for our affectionate, energetic, and joyful 4-year-old autistic son. The position is for 2 to 3 hours a week (totally to 8 hrs a month) on weekends through the Targeted Short Breaks programme.
About Our Son: He is easily entertained, loves to laugh, and enjoys activities such as going to parks, soft play, and swimming. His challenges include sensory-seeking behavior, limited understanding of danger, and delayed verbal communication, limited to some words and non-verbal gestures.
Responsibilities include: taking him out to engage in age-appropriate activities (e.g., park outings, soft play, swimming); nappy changing as needed; and ensuring his safety at all times.
Requirements: some experience working with autistic children; a strong understanding of the vigilance required in caring for a child with a limited sense of danger, and consistent attendance, as long gaps between visits can be challenging for him and the family.
We are supportive and flexible, and we will work closely with you to help you understand our son and how best to care for him.

My son Justice is 5.5 he is in year 1. He goes to school in Brockley/Ladywell.
Justice is Currently non-verbal but very soon you will get to understand him as he gestures what he wants. He is a very happy boy but of course with ASD sometimes can get quite upset. He is currently not fully potty trained but has begun to understand the concept of 1 &2 in the toilet so would be great if you can help support and encourage him with this. Justice would need to be picked up from school so great if you have a car. He loves the outdoors so it would be fantastic if you had a garden or don’t mind a walk, trip to the park afterschool. As that is where Justice is at his best when he is outside.
Justice May/May not need dinner at yours we can discuss what would work best, snacks or dinner. We can discuss if I need to provide snacks/dinner. I pick my my daughter after 6pm so dropping Justice home in honor oak/forest hill would be great or we can discuss pick up depending on where you live. Let’s have a chat and see if this would work for you.
