I have been tutoring one-to-one for 20 years. I teach: Maths up to GCSE; 11+ coaching in Maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning; English and Maths from age 6 to 11; children with special needs from 6 to 18 (Autism, Asperger's syndrome, Dyslexia, etc.)
Children are less self conscious about their difficulties in a one-to-one environment. This means that concepts can be explained several times, and in different ways, without their peers having to know they are finding it hard to understand. There is not enough time in the school timetable to allow for this, even if children are not too timid to say they need help.
I thoroughly enjoy my job. There are very few experiences that compare to witnessing a child understanding a concept for the very first time.
