Special Needs Care in Enfield

| I am a highly experienced child care professional with more than 10 years of experience in early years and special needs. I have completed an International Diploma in Montessori method which is considered as a foundation for the current methods used in early years education. In addition, I also hold a Diplomas in Special Needs Education and Early Childhood and Primary Education. I recently completed a Paediatric First aid course in order to enhance my work in the field.

| I have worked with children and young adults with special needs for 32 years. Over the years I have been a respite carer for Barnet social services, a special needs nanny, a special needs TA and I also worked as a mainstream nanny and nursery nurse. I have qualifications such as NNEB, City and Guilds in Learning support and more recently have completed a BA in Special Educational needs and inclusive practice. Next year o aim to start my PGCE equivalent qualification to work as a teacher in a special needs school. I love working with children, especially those with Special needs, as no two days are the same. Also to be part of a team, that includes the child/young adult and their family to enable them to work towards achieving their goals is truly something special. I feel that they have taught me the true meaning of courage and determination over the years too as everyday they strive towards their goals.Tbeir love of life is inspiring. Which in turn makes me feel lucky to have a job that mostly doesn't feel like a job.

| My name is Emily and I am a student speech and language therapist in the last year of my Master's degree. As part of this degree, I have attended placements which involved working with children, young people and adults with speech and language difficulties. I have also been working part-time with a child with autism. My previous experience includes working in a SEN secondary school as a speech and language therapy assistant where I gave therapy sessions to children with a range of special educational needs. These included autism, Down's Syndrome, cerebral palsy and children with expressive and receptive language delays. I absolutely love what I do and I am looking to offer my skills and knowledge to someone who needs it.

| At present I am supporting SEN children in a mainstream school. I worked with Autism, Asperger's, Downs Syndrome and learning delayed. I also have experience with the elderly.

| Working with people with disabilities and also elderly people, it has been a great and rewarding adventure. I really enjoy the playful and fun loving interactions I have with my clients. I have mostly worked with people with developmental disabilities, so many of my reflections may pertain specifically to that population but not exclusively. A lot of times when people write about what they have learned about working with people with disabilities, it is about courage and determination and overcoming many challenging things like adversity, stigma, prejudice and injustice. I may write about that, however, there are a lot of other things that I learned that were more personal to me. I have learned about different personalities and how people, who may first seem very different than me, are actually unexpectedly very relatable. The cover of a book often doesn’t always reveal much of its content. Small words, thoughts and gestures can be such a surprise and make me realize a new way of communicating or relating to someone. I sometimes even see my subtle impact and influence on others, which I often don’t realize I have.

| I have worked with individuals with dementia, complex care needs and providing end of life care. Recently, I provided end of life care for 2 weeks to a service user and I worked well with the palliative care teams and also supportive family with respite care.
