The Tonkinese cat, a Siamese-Burmese hybrid, is a wonderful breed known for its social, yet not overly demanding, personality. Whether by jumping onto your shoulder or leaping into your lap, your Tonkinese (or "Tonk"), will never cease to show he cares. But you need to show your love in return, so if you're looking for a cat that will be happy staying in an empty house all day, you probably need to look again. However, if you're looking for an intelligent and affectionate lifelong friend, who will greet you at the door or play fetch and hide and go seek, search no more--the Tonk fits the bill perfectly. This breed is also great for active children who don't mind their pet being in the middle of everything they do.
If you have the time and resources to get more than one Tonk, consider getting two. Their overly social nature lends well to a pair, as they will be able to play together and keep each other entertained. Tonkinese cats have very few grooming needs, and an occasional brushing will be more than enough for their short, silky coats (and they'll love the attention!) Tonks are a robust breed with a lifespan of 12 to 18 years, but be sure to monitor their health, especially as they age. As always, check with your veterinarian with any questions you have about the health or care of your cat, and be sure to keep up with regular vaccinations.
