Care Stories from the Homefront
Meet Becky O.

As a military family we have a unique situation when it comes to finding care for our 2-year-old daughter. We move often (averaging once every 2-3 years) and are always very far from family (right now about 2,700 miles away!). I work part-time AND own a home-based cloth diaper business so besides needing to find a sitter for a date night or two, we often need care for business meetings or so I can get work done. And not knowing many people here in Tucson, we wanted to find a "service" to help us with finding someone to watch our daughter.

We joined Care.com when Paige was about 6-months-old since we realized it was high time we went out on a grown-up date! Within 2 days we had 5 or 6 interviews setup with sitters in our area that we had conversed with through the e-mail feature on Care.com. We ended up working with 2 lovely gals who were both wonderful, very reliable AND easy to get in touch with even on short notice. Here we are, 19 months later, and one of those sitters, Jill, still watches Paige an average of 4 times a month for us! Paige just adores her! She is highly qualified as she is a licensed kindergarten teacher.

In addition, we moved to Las Vegas temporarily from June 2010-November 2010 while my husband attended some training for his job in the Air Force. While there, I needed to travel home to New Jersey for almost a month and this meant leaving my cloth diaper business in the hands of someone else for that time. Not wanting to burden a friend, I once again I turned to Care.com and found a wonderful "helper" who was able to come to our apartment and pack and ship orders to customers for me. This was a huge help in that I didn't have to make customers wait for merchandise while I was away visiting family!

We will be looking for a part-time nanny to come to our home a couple of days per week beginning this summer once baby #2 arrives in May. Where will we turn? You guessed it-Care.com for sure!

Meet Kimberly S.

I am a military wife and mother of 11-month-old twins and an adopted 16-month-old, all girls. My husband and I adopted our niece and during the adoption process learned we were pregnant with twins. While I was pregnant I was laid off. Little did I know, the hardest job I had ever had was waiting for me around the corner - being a Mother. It is a 24/7 job and left very little time to myself. By utilizing Care.com, I was able to find a part-time nanny who helped me throughout the week so I could run miscellaneous errands.

I found a very qualified part-time nanny Katie who we adored! She had the experience we needed to care for multiples, which included situations like ours of 3 babies. Katie as reliable, responsible, knowledgeable, and had the training we felt was necessary to keep our children safe. Thank you, Care.com, for helping our family find the relief all Mother's need whether it's a stay at home mom, working mother, or date night.

Meet Nikki H.

We are a busy Marine family with 3 kids. My husband is active duty Marine Corps, and we live aboard Camp Lejeune in Base Housing. I wouldn't know what to do without your service since he is deployed a lot of the time. My daycare was closing, and I was in a bind to find child care. Since I only work part-time, my options for care facilities in my area that accommodate the part-time working mom were limited. Going with a regular child care center would mean I would have to pay for full time care when I didn't need it.

Going with a regular child care center would mean I would have to pay for full time care when I didn't need it. As a result, I would be paying just to work. Care.com not only gave me the flexibility to find a caregiver whose schedule fit mine, but also the convenience of having my sitter come to me. Being a "pseudo single mom" with a deployed husband, my stress in getting my kids out the door and to daycare was eliminated! Care.com is a single source tool with everything needed to find the right sitter for our family.

Meet Kurt N.

Military families are often in unfamiliar cities without family or friends nearby. I was able to use Care.com to easily find a caregiver for my two dogs while I attended a 5-week military training course. One of my dogs had special needs, and she cared for them both as if they were her own. I would gladly use her again and highly recommend her.

I don't like to spend a lot of time scrolling through websites, and on Care.com I was able to easily navigate through the site and correspond with potential caregivers. I would definitely use the site again, and I often recommend the site when I hear of other military members needing a caregiver.

Meet Lila V.

I first learned of Care.com in 2009 when my husband and I came to Fort Knox, Kentucky with our 5-year-old twin boys. We had "PCS'd" (Military-speak for moved) to Fort Knox from Round Rock, Texas so that my husband, an Army Lieutenant Colonel, could assume command of a field artillery battalion preparing for deployment to Afghanistan this winter. As a working mom, I was drawn to Care.com's online security and deep provider pool. My children have been in child care since they were 3-months-old, ranging from on-post military child care to a network of nannies and babysitters who also supported us in Texas.

Also, as a maternal and child health professional, a service that recognized the importance of providing security gave me immediate confidence and peace of mind. I was both delighted and impressed with not only the number of Care.com providers in the Fort Knox area, but more importantly, that so many of the providers were from the military community. Living on a military post means higher security requirements, so it was hugely helpful to find a great nanny who was already cleared to access post. Furthermore, I'm happy to be able to provide a job for a military spouse. We're now delighted to have the support of an amazing provider, Kim, whom we found through Care.com. A military spouse and a personal trainer (and mother-to-be), she's a wonderful care provider for my boys: fun, active, loving and, most of all, responsible.
