Activities in Winchester, MA

Winchester artist, Kiyomi Yatsuhashi will lead this one-day workshop on the Japanese craft of shibori and indigo dyeing. She will start with a brief introduction to Japanese textile resist dyeing. Demonstrations and practice will include shibori resist techniques such as binding, folding, wrapping, and clamping to create dyed patterns. You'll bring home indigo dyed unfinished cotton pieces that can be used for a quilt, wall hanging, table scarf, or napkin. Included in the workshop is one small finished scarf or bandana. All materials are included in this special one-day workshop. Limited to eight participants. NOTES: Materials Fee of $25 is included in the tuition fee and covers the cost of indigo dyes, tools, and fabric. Optional: natural fiber scarves (cotton, silk, wool), cotton bandanas, and kitchen towels & napkins will be available for purchase on the day of the workshop for anyone who would like to apply the shibori techniques to these items. Indigo dye will stain your clothing and shoes. From drawing, to painting, to dioramas - we will do a little bit of everything this week as we explore undersea creatures. This week is for those kids who say that their favorite color is all the colors in the rainbow! This week we will focus on making colorful projects that will sure to put a smile on your face! Each day will feature super fun art projects including drawing, painting, sculpture, and more! A few of the AWESOME projects we will make this week include: Extra large rainbow collage - a fan favorite project! Rainbow inspired paper pinata Model magic rainbow Beaded sun catcher that will make rainbows in your window Red, orange, green, blue, purple, pink drawings, paintings, and sculptures! To wrap up the summer we have remixed and revisited our favorite projects from this summer for a fun filled finale! This week we will experiment with materials such as prisms, mirrors, bubble wrap, glow in the dark beads, shaving cream, paint, and more - and let our imagination run wild! This week is sure to delight the adventurous artist! Looking for something fun to do during February Break? Join us for this fun-packed 3-day class, where students will learn the basics of throwing on the wheel including centering and opening to create their own unique forms. Each student will have their own wheel for the entirety of the class period. This class is open to beginner - intermediate level students. If you have never taken pottery before OR if you have taken a pottery class with us and would like to improve your skills, we welcome you all to join us!

At the Studio we're lucky to have ceramic artists eager to share their craft with your kids. This week-long camp will focus on a mixture of hand building and wheel throwing. We will create a variety of bowls, plates, cups, vases, and more while experimenting with surface design and glazes.

Whether you're just starting out or a more seasoned potter, we welcome you to our evening Adult Pottery Sessions. We'll teach the basics of wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing as you create a variety of pieces you'll be proud to show off. The cost of the class includes 25 lbs of clay, tools, glaze, and firing of work made during class time. Additional clay can be purchased at the studio with cash during open studio hours. Open Studio time is included with your registration.

This class is for students who have taken prior wheel working classes, at Studio on the Common or elsewhere. Students will be encouraged to take on projects that expand their skills while exploring individual creativity in clay. Projects may include working with larger pieces, more complex forms, creating sets, and experimenting with surface design. All students will have their own wheel for the entirety of the class period.

This course is designed for intermediate potters who want to level up their skills by creating advanced forms including goblets, platters, serving bowls, and pitchers. Each class, we will demonstrate a new form and surface design techniques. Pre-requisites for this course are that you have taken at least one Adult Pottery on the Wheel class at Studio on the Common or a similar course elsewhere OR you can confidently center 3 to 5 lbs of clay on the wheel and pull a cylinder form from it. If you don't meet those prerequisites, we are still offering multiple beginner courses at Studio on the Common for you to learn and practice the basics of wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing. Open Studio time is included with your registration. Additional clay can be purchased at the studio.

Calling all young artists to join Art Club! Art club is many things...It's a creative space bursting with the supplies and materials artists use to make beautiful art. It's a learning place teaching skills in drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, clay and more! It's a nurturing community encouraging friendships and camaraderie as we create art together. Welcome to Art Club! We're excited to watch each member grow in artistic skill and creative confidence while having a TON of fun! Note: Fabulous Fiber Arts is offered twice during the summer. The techniques may overlap, but the projects are different in each session - so feel free to register for one week or both for double the fun! Some of the AWESOME projects we will make this week: Tie pillows using fluffy fleece Needle felting Tie dyed creation Weaving on a circle loom And so much more!!
