| I have been teaching English lit/lang for the past decade, GCSE and A-Level, covering all skill levels. I tailor the lesson to the individuals needs/personality, this often entails asking the students about their hobbies and likes in order to package the information in ways they will enjoy. It's important to try to facilitate an environment wherein the learning experience is anticipated positively. I use PowerPoint when needed but for the most part engage the student in Socratic interactive class participation to promote their level of learning and understanding. This is sometimes alongside video presentations (for example Shakespeare needs to be seen not just read). Most of the lesson will be dialogue to expand the student’s critical analysis faculties through discourse rather than by rote. The key is listening to the student and when practical, have them do most of the talking whilst promoting best educational practises. Engaging the interest of the pupil is critical to how I teach, attempting to make the lessons fun especially if the student is struggling with the subject. I provide handouts so that the students write notes based on understanding of the material rather than just the material itself.
