I have previously volunteered for 2 years in an NGO that dealt with children and youth from troubled families, some of which had mild mental illnesses. I went to the center three times per week for an average of 4-5 hours.
Currently, I am employed as a support worker for people with mental health problems and physical impairments. I have been working here for three months and have received training for medication, fire safety, first aid, person centered care, nutrition and meal planning, etc. My responsibilities go from helping with personal care, cooking, housework to giving medication, documenting the progress as well as incidents and accompanying my clients anywhere they wish to or need to go.
The reason why I love caring for people with special needs is because I feel I'm making a difference. I've always been a people pleaser and I've realised from a young age that I would be most successful in a work environment that involves people and human interaction. I believe that I can provide satisfying care as I involve myself emotionally and try to give my clients a sense of security, loyalty and trust.
