Need a companion for a gentleman residing in a care home.
Needed Thursday and Saturday 1.30 til 5.30 (timings can be slightly flexible) but would also need to be flexible to be able to cover the other days if other companion was off sick or on holiday. Obviously if this arises wouldn't be expected to work 7 days but cover as many days as possible.
Personal care and medication is taken care of by care home.
Duties include, helping use TV remote to find films/documentaries he would like to watch. Taking him outside to smoke. Being able to open music app on laptop for him. Taking him out for something to eat or coffee. Reading him articles from newspaper. Talking with him. Generally just spending time with him so he isn't as lonely.
He has dementia although not severely advanced, MS and has had strokes. He is mobile although walks slow and mainly uses a walker. He loves to talk about past events and also keep up to date with current news. He's very intelligent and knowledgeable. Would also need to report back to family on a weekly basis of how he has been and any events occurred during your time with him.
Care home is in Reigate area and would prefer someone local and someone who can drive as he does like to go for drives. Pay can be discussed.
There is another companion who can help introduce, help with first couple of days and expected duties and answer any questions.

71 year old gentle gentleman with dementia and balance issues caused by stroke and MS needs someone to keep him company during the afternoons. His current companion is in hospital for an unspecified time so we are seeking help for the next 2 weeks or so. 4 to 5 hours a day in the afternoon/early evening for 4 or 5 days a week - you choose the days. Own transport needed so you can take him out to a pub or a drive (and because the home is a bit remote) Work mileage will be paid as well as a good rate of pay. Preference is for an immediate start. You must live within 30 minutes drive of Reigate Heath. We found longer distances don't work!

Help him to make phone calls, get the right Channels on the TV, work his laptop. Talk about sports, current affairs, history, technology (esp software) Perhaps read to him or set up audible or podcasts for him. Keep him company, go on short walks with him on the grounds, perhaps go on short outings with him. I put 6 hours per week because I couldn't leave it blank. The number of hours really depends on what my husband would want and what works for you. That needs to be determined once we all have a sense of what it will be like for him to have a companion. To start 2 hour visits 2 times per week. If that goes well hours can be increased. Afternoons or evenings (exact times to be agreed with the nursing home) flexible as to days of the week but once agreed needs to be consistent.
