When can you start working as a caregiver?

Need respite type help to mentor, teach life skills and share experiences

by Nicole • Oshawa
Hoping to find someone to tutor my teen in her SAL program for 2 hours then ‘hang out’ for another hour and a half either at the mall or dollarama or thrifting etc… My daughter’s been to many various therapy’s and programs to help support but we haven’t found one that’ll help her understand the importance of investing in her future self via her education. She’s diagnosed with ADHD, autism, social anxiety and sensory integration disorder. She just meets the threshold for the first three and is considered very high functioning. Her sensory integration disorder significantly limits the types of foods she can comfortably eat.

The respite worker would accompany the client out in the community (community centre, hiking, car rides, malls, restaurants) and spend some limited time at home to keep him engaged and physically active. A male worker is required and should be comfortable taking client in their car out into the community. He requires some supervision and some assistance in the bathroom. He can communicate some needs using single words. He does not experience challenging behaviours but does not have road safety skills and would require supervision at all times when out in the community. The respite worker would need a vulnerable sector check and experience working with adults with developmental disabilities.

We are actively searching for an individual, a person with a heart full of empathy, abundant patience, and immense understanding in dealing with others. This chosen person will provide support to our beloved son while we are away for approximately three weeks. At 30 years old, our son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. In spite of his condition, he doesn't accept any suggested medical treatment. However, he is non-violent, consistently maintains a pleasant demeanor, and leads a quietly unintrusive lifestyle. Does this seem like a role you might consider? To provide a clearer picture, our son spends his days in his own unique rhythm and way. The support required in our absence involves various daily household activities. These duties include preparing meals that cater to his taste preferences, undertaking household chores like cleaning different parts of the house, doing the laundry, and caring for our family cat—of which he is quite fond—by ensuring it is fed and cared for appropriately. Other tasks include retrieving the mail, taking out the garbage as needed, tending to houseplants, and running errands for groceries. At this point, we haven't determined the total number of support hours required daily. We are open to negotiating this aspect, depending on what works best for you and aligns suitably with our son's needs. Although we prefer these services to be rendered in the afternoon, we are not rigid in this regard. The timeframe for providing the services is entirely flexible and can be adjusted according to what suits both parties best.

We are seeking someone who is experienced in working with the neurodivergent. Our daughter will be 13 this year chronologically, but not necessarily cognitively. She has really struggled this past year with impulse control, self control and self modulation. She has several diagnoses but functions fairly well in public and at school, and stores up frustrations for when she gets home. At home, she is not using the tools we and counselors have taught her. This is where we would like the help, for someone to come in and work with her in the home ("who is not us!") to help her to better self regulate and learn to use her tools. We would like to see someone help her with socialization, social cues, possibly take her into the community, we'll see how it goes.
