Winter Exercise for Dogs

If you're snowed indoors in D.C. or in a colder climate, getting exercise for your puppies can be a challenge (nevermind for yourself!).
What are some of the best tips and tricks you have for making sure your dogs are staying fit during the winter?
Some ideas we've come across and used:
- off-lease exercise (tug-of-war is an all-time favorite)
- indoor training courses or a one-day-a week puppy day care
- bundling up and getting out there! Sometimes, we're the ones that have to be trained to face the cold...

Has anyone tried cross-country skiing with your dog on a leash? I just tried cross-country and want to bring the dogs, but one of them can't go off-leash - he runs away. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions!!
