Vocal Tics
By Amy S. on Fri Mar 11, 2011 at 10:56 AM EST
My son recently developed vocal tics about 5 months ago. Anyone with children with ADHD that has vocal tics can discuss this here.

Hi amy...I just joined this site. I don't know if you are still here, but my son developed vocal tics around a year and a half ago. It's never the same sound/noise and they last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. He is unaware that he is doing them most of the time. He will be 9 this spring. What are your experiences with vocal tics? Is there anyway to treat them?

My pediatrician said that these tics will come and go. They will have one and then it will go away and then something else will take it's place. Try to ignore them she said. Sometimes it's hard to sometimes. They are nervous habits and they get worse when they are nervous.

Speech therapy can help with vocal tics as can therapy when the tics are worsened by anxiety.

My sister has Tourette syndrome .It started out as vocal tics when she was a child. She was mis diognosed for years .. had her adnoids removed because the stupid doctors said they were the cause..she was 5 . This may not be your case but don't overlook it. and take caution when it comes to medication it turned her into a drug addict later in life.
