My maternal grandfather had to be moved in with us in the spring of 2011 and stayed in our care until the disease took him that September. I shared my room with him the entire time and helped keep him safe and out of trouble. This would include persuading him out of the neighbor's car, which was "his", carefully retrieving our pointed ice cream scoop and potato peeler from him, and, finally, helping him to the chair when he stumbled in those last few minutes. In 2019, we had to move in with my paternal grandmother, also with dementia, and lived in her house until she passed in the fall of 2021. I would stay with her to give my parents a break, and I made our meals for a few weeks. Those last few months, we had to flip the door knobs and install deadbolts to keep her from wandering off into the street or falling into the river.
