My child lost laptop!..How to prevent this from happening?? *Frustrated parent

My daughter comes home from school.. backpack in tow... but where is her very nice very expensive laptop that she went to school with? We just bought her this gift for Christmas. She says it was stolen.. either way it's a case of irresponsibility.
I didn't put insurance on it. Mistake. I really want to track and find who has that computer.. to know if it was a classmate.
I have to get her another laptop though she needs it for school.. at this time it is a necessity. What program do you recommend to help keep track of a laptop (in the event she gets another one)?
HELP!!

There is a product called LoJack for Laptops (http://www.absolute.com/en/lojackforlaptops/home.aspx). I don't have personal experience with it, but it sounds like it will do what you are looking for.
