Artist of Color - Black History Month Alma Thomas In our upcoming art class, we will be creating pieces inspired by the vibrant and expressive abstract works of Alma Thomas, a pioneering African-American artist celebrated for her unique style and impactful legacy. We'll explore Thomas’s signature use of joyful, mosaic-like patterns and bright, precise brushstrokes, which she derived from her appreciation of nature and the cosmos. Our project will involve each student choosing a natural or celestial theme as their muse and reinterpreting it in Thomas's distinctive style, using bold colors and dynamic compositions. This exercise promises to be not only a creative exploration but also a meaningful homage to one of the first African-American women to receive a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.textures, ensuring each piece is as unique as the next. Welcome to our new Process Art Lab, a process- oriented art class focused on exploration, creativity, and imagination. Each week, we will dive into open- ended art experiences that will expand our understanding of what we can do with materials. We'll work 2-d and 3-d materials. We'll collage, sprinkle, smear, splat, shake, sculpt, paint -- all cultivating innovation, creative confidence, social/ emotional growth, and of course, giggles! Artists will be welcomed into a studio space full of art and sensory activities designed specifically for them. Combining open play and exploration, artists will be invited to an art exploration--an open ended lesson that will allow the artists to approach the materials at their individual levels. Artists will spend time together creating at the table with the option to return to open play if they complete the art invitation. Capacity: 8 children. IF A CLASS HAS LESS THAN 4 STUDENTS ENROLLED 2 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE CLASS, IT WILL BE CANCELLED, AND YOU WILL BE OFFERED A CHOICE TO RESCHEDULE OR BE REFUNDED. *
