This course will focus on patterning for fashion design. We will cover the basic principles of apparel development from patterning to construction. This includes flat patterning, sewing techniques, garment assembly, and adjusting for perfect fit. Students will be introduced to the innovative problem solving required to take a two dimensional form and fit a three dimensional figure. Results: To create, sew, and pattern at least ONE garment in Fashion Fabric To Create A Library of pattern manipulation samples in 1/2 scale (patterns and sewn examples) Curriculum: Flat Patterning Techniques To learn how to create, read, and utilize a pattern for garment construction To foster craftsmanship, problem-solving and creative thinking To introduce a conversation of creative reuse and upcycle materials in fashion and accessories To develop mature work habits that are vital for success in the design field, including planning ahead, pacing projects, punctuality, dependability, and meeting deadlines Each In-Person Sewing & Pattern Making Class size limited to 5 students. Fashion Design Classes are limited to 8 students. Cancellation Policy - Please make sure you are able to commit to the classes before you register. She studied dyeing methods, textile life cycle assessments, and ultimately dove into biotextile design. Her work there led her to Make: where she's been sharing her research on kombucha textiles and cosplay. As a fashion designer she's worked professionally in pattern drafting, loungewear design, textile print design, and with private clients for cosplay design and construction. Her cosplay work has been featured by Marvel Comics, and seen on such sites as Vanity Fair, LA Weekly, and the Daily Mail UK. Fashion Studies Program - Spring 2025 Semester - Flat Pattern Making

This course will focus on patterning for fashion design. We will cover the basic principles of apparel development from patterning to construction. This includes flat patterning, sewing techniques, garment assembly, and adjusting for perfect fit. Students will be introduced to the innovative problem solving required to take a two dimensional form and fit a three dimensional figure. Results: To create, sew, and pattern at least ONE garment in Fashion Fabric To Create A Library of pattern manipulation samples in 1/2 scale (patterns and sewn examples) Curriculum: Flat Patterning Techniques To learn how to create, read, and utilize a pattern for garment construction To foster craftsmanship, problem-solving and creative thinking To introduce a conversation of creative reuse and upcycle materials in fashion and accessories To develop mature work habits that are vital for success in the design field, including planning ahead, pacing projects, punctuality, dependability, and meeting deadlines Each In-Person Sewing & Pattern Making Class size limited to 5 students. Fashion Design Classes are limited to 8 students. Cancellation Policy - Please make sure you are able to commit to the classes before you register. Cancellations with refunds will only be accepted for two weeks before classes commence in January Student may make up a missed class by attending one of our sewing classes or another "Design" Class, provided there is space. There are NO additional pattern making classes, so direct make up classes for missed pattern making classes are NOT available. Please do not come to class if you are sick. Masks optional.

Machine Basics Sewing Class - Monday - March

In our Machine Basics Sewing Class you will learn: - How to Thread Your Machine - How To Thread a Bobbin - How to Top thread and bobbin thread work together - How to use the different stitches on your machine, time permitting - How to adjust your machine tension; when and why you do it - Which needles to use with which fabrics Additionally, students will receive hand outs regarding machine trouble shooting and getting started with projects. Cancellation Policy : Please give us 48 hour notice if you wish to cancel with a refund. 24 hour notice for rescheduling. No-shows and cancelations with less than 24 hours notice will not be refunded or rescheduled. Instructor Julie Ann has been teaching at The Sewing Room for several Years. Since earning her BFA in Fashion Design at Otis, she worked in Southern California for two decades designing swimwear for labels such as Girlstar, bebe, Lucky Brand, Betsey Johnson, ále by Alessandra Ambrosio, Soluna and Isabella Rose. Her designs have been featured in Vogue, GQ, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Sports Illustrated.
