I lived with a cat over a year, he was my friend's cat, but I had a strong connection and I was able to gain his trust. My sister also adopted a rescued dog, I was taking care of him while she was working. Taking him for a walk, giving his medicines (as he was rescued dogs, he was ill quite a while), washing him etc. While I did not this professionally before, I can assure you my connection with our paws friend generally very quick and I can have a good connection with them. I know it requires lots of responsibility as well, I am aware of that too.
