I have spent the last two years completing a Level 3 extended diploma in Health and Social care and I am due to be awarded with a final grade of DMM (equivalent to ABB at A- Level). Studying this qualification has allowed me to develop skills and knowledge to prepare me for a career in care. During my course, I completed 3 weeks unpaid work experience in a learning unit for adults with learning disabilities and thoroughly enjoyed being given the opportunity to work in such a rewarding environment. Although my placement was short, every day was different and I leaned a lot about different learning disabilities and mental health conditions, as well as the strategies of care for clients that have them. I developed many skills during my time at the unit and even had the opportunity to learn some simple Makaton signs, which proved effective in communicating with clients that had communication difficulties. I believe that, although I only have a small amount of practical experience, the skills I have developed, paired with knowledge I have gained through academic study, makes me an equally good candidate as someone with a lot of practical experience, as it all falls down to what you have learned that can be transferred to a job.
