Experience volunteering at Battersea Dogs Home
|
I love animals and have been involved in different animal charities. One of them is Battersea Dogs, where I volunteered for a year. Here I learnt a lot about animal welfare and the process of adopting a dog.
In 2012 I rescued my own dog from Greece. My partner and I went on holidays to Rhodes and he was there, abandoned by the hotel beach. I fell in love with him and decided to adopt him. It was tricky and expensive but so worth it. It is the best thing I have ever done and since then I have not looked back. I love animals in general and love nature, and in order to become a better owner I learnt a lot about canine behaviour and signs. Dogs communicate with each other and with us via their body language and it is key to understand what they are saying in order to know them. I have also volunteered for other animal charities, but in the office side, like World Animal Protection and Elephant Family, and I have donated to several animal charities too.
As I worked in Battersea, I know kennels are not the ideal place for dogs to stay. Sometimes I know there is no choice, but when there is I truly believe that dogs are better when they stay in their own home or with someone they trust and know.
