S is an 11-year-old child on the spectrum who I formed a special bond with last summer. S has struggled in school, with people finding her difficult to work with and she has faced school exclusion. Working with S I found the complete opposite to every way she was described. She was a joy, and a child who thinks differently is my jam! I found her to be so creative, kind and assertive of her needs. I was inspired by her willingness to communicate with me and it allowed me to see how my learning styles were matched with hers. She was determined to stick up for her friends which is something I value so much. This has showed me how important one-to-one care is. How the impact you have on a child, can change their life. They just want to be listened to, be given agency and have someone believe in them. That is why I love working with children. They bring an energy and thoughtfulness that adults can often have lost. I also believe there is no such thing as a difficult child, we as adults just haven't figured out how to communicate with them and understand their point of view yet.
