I have a strong desire to care for vulnerable young people. Being neurodiverse, I am able to provide heartfelt care, focus and deep empathy to many areas of work. Being autistic, I spent a large amount of my time in later education in a Learning Support environment. During this time, I formed friendships with people aged 11-18 with a variety of disabilities, e.g. Down’s Syndrome, Cerebal palsy and autism. I spent time daily over these 3 years mentoring a student who has Down’s syndrome, taking part in tasks such as role play, reading, spelling tests, art work, crafts and emotional support. I absolutely loved it and immediately knew that working with disabled children was something I wished to continue into a career. As I have been through the education system undiagnosed and diagnosed autistic (diagnosed at 15), I have comprehensive understanding of the struggles and methods in which can help prevent anxieties in disabled children. Whilst using my experience, I would always ensure each person is treated as an individual, taking into account their opinions, desires and needs. I previously volunteered at a Rainbow guide group, working closely with a group of 4-5 year olds assisting with tasks and providing emotional support.
