For five years, I worked as a Patient Assistant in the General Hospital in Isolo, Lagos. This involved similar duties to that of the support worker role. This involved caring for patients within a surgical ward of the hospital. This involved assisting the patients with their daily needs, assisting them to get around and to get to other appointments and departments. Much of my role involved reassuring and calming the patients, listening to them to ensure that their needs were met and working closely with my colleagues from the medical staff team to alert them of anything that I was not qualified to support with. I really enjoyed this work and took a lot of satisfaction from helping patients and communicating with their families. My role was a demanding role – both physically and mentally at times and required me to think on my feet and to be organised and methodical in my approach to my work duties.
