Decades ago,post graduation, I took on a care role for a widowed lady. She was quite independent, and I had to coax her into giving me tasks! She simply wanted someone to listen and share stories. After I left that temporary placement, I was saddened, to hear from an ex-colleague that the lady would always ask after me. This pleased me because it meant we had had a good relationship, but I was saddened because I expected any carer that followed to provide the same excellent level of service.I didn't do anything special,I simply treated her in accordance with my values. Now decades later, after a professional life in customer service and IT, and staying at home to raise my children, I am ready to have a role that is fulfilling again. I have never forgotten that lady. I realize, from first hand experience caring for the elderly is not always a bed of roses, as with my first lady ..I cared for my late mother before she passed from cancer, and my mother-in-law is currently battling dementia. The only way to truly live fulfilled life is to be a genuine support to others, especially the most vulnerable.
