Personal Statement For over 21 years I have been personally and professionally committed to supporting the needs of people with special needs so that they can have the knowledge and practical skills needed to thrive. My personal commitment to people with special needs grew out of necessity. My sister (Jade) is a talented 21-year-old young lady who was born and lives with autism, oculo-cutaneious albinism and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements); she is also photophobic (sensitive to light) and registered as significantly sight impaired. My son, who is a bright twelve year old, was born and lives with a few allergies including to peanuts, milk products, and fish. The special needs of both my sister and son have given me a lot of experience in providing heightened care with patience and love and supporting the emotional and physical development of the vulnerable in ways that would prepare them to live and thrive at home and in the community. My professional commitment to persons with special needs grew out of choice. Beginning in 2010, I have chosen to work alongside families like mine.
