My career as a carer started when I cared for my Grandad, when I was 17 years of age. I then went onto work within hospitals, predominantly with the elderly. The ward in which I was based, specialised in dementia care and Parkinson's disease. During my Level 2 health & social care apprenticeship, I chose to specialise in dementia care and have certificates to reflect this. Whilst working in hospitals, I worked with a range of different patients. This included cancer care, elderly care, A&E, inpatients & outpatients department, winter beds and many other wards.
After working within hospital settings for 4 years, I decided to widen my experience and began working with children with disabilities, both physical and mental. I built up experience over the course of around 4 years.
I then progressed onto work with adults with disabilities, where I became a care co-ordinator.
My career path then led me onto work within a supported living unit, working with adults with disabilities and complex behaviours. This was 'specialist support' in which I learnt to implement positive behavioural support. I started with this company as a team leader and was then promoted to support manager after just 3 months of service.
