Enthusiastic, fun-loving carer required for our autistic (non verbal) son
by Stuart • Govan
We urgently require help caring for our son who recently had to spend 3 days in hospital due to complications arising from his severely restricted diet. L is non verbal and has been suffering more acute anxiety symptoms of late which require a sensitive understanding of his autism. L can be very cuddly and loving but stress makes him act out his more aggressive tendencies. Be aware, this is not the norm but candidates need to be aware that slapping, kicking and throwing objects is part of autism. It is worth noting that when he is engaged and entertained these behaviours are rarely present. This is entirely the point of our reaching out. With a newborn baby in the household and a teenager half the month my partner and I are drowning in tasks and the specialist needs of each child are proving difficult to meet. Our own needs as parents and partners are even more forgotten.
We need a person qualified to deal with severe autism. Somebody with a bright and bubbly disposition will really get on well with L. He loves walking in nature, picking leaves, swimming, driving and seeing new places. As such a driving license is essential. His mood is linked to your mood. If you smile, he might not smile with you, but he will smile inside, and eventually his positive mood leaks out! It really is rewarding when it does.
L will need pads changed although daytime ones are usually all just wet. Carer's not changing pads has been a major source of his unrest when returning from official carer sessions (social work). His comfort and hygiene are crucial to his mood when out and about. He may also need meals prepared which simply consist of dairylea on white toast. Our holy grail of care is to reduce L high anxiety levels such that he feels curious enough to try some new foods. Any candidate with dietary/nutrition experience would be highly regarded but what we mostly need is a patient, kindly, fun loving soul who can match L energy levels.
We are very open to negotiating hours and schedules. Please don't be put off if the schedule of hours proposed is insufficient. It was merely an opening gambit. Pinch points in the week are mornings, evenings (off school bus) and weekends. L is bored with his current care package and needs exciting new activities. He has a safe space that he retreats to when unsettled and anxious and he has been spending more and more time there at the weekend, which means the family are housebound.

Mohamed is a four year old child living with autism and what we would need would be applied behavioural analysis (ABA) tutoring. This would be overseen by a BCBA, a board certified behavioural analyst, meaning that you don't need any formal training. How this would work is that you would work directly with Mohamed for 6h a week, and have a training session with the BCBA for 1h a week to prepare you for the sessions.
