During my time at school in Niagara, I had to work on the side as a support worker for individuals with disabilities in Burlington, ON. In addition, I worked/still work with multiple families to support their youth and adults whom have multiple disabilities.
Some of them include High/low functioning autism, OCD, Asperger’s syndrome, Down syndrome, and physical and mental handicaps. Working predominantly with three individuals with high risk behaviours, such as being highly physically aggressive towards their peers, strangers, and family in addition to their environment.
I was able to apply the information I learned throughout school right into the field. Such as DE-escalation techniques to establish self-regulation for the individual, promoting positive social interactions, positive reinforcement, and extension of unwanted behaviours in public.
My placements during my E.A program were at both group home, and Support Services in Niagara. I got a chance to observe a senior therapist as they developed behavioural plans though ABA and also worked 1-on-1 to implement them to individuals with schizophrenia, CP, chromosome disorders, and low functioning autistic.
