A compassionate special needs nanny, with a Communication Sciences and Speech Therapy background
|
For three years before leaving England, I worked as a special needs nanny in London for a 7 year old boy with Dravet Syndrome, and his 5 year old sister. I gained extensive knowledge and experience in monitoring and assessing daily seizure activity, whilst learning a form of communication that best suited his autistic needs. During school holidays, I planned days out to keep him physically active and mentally stimulated. Through excellent communication with the family, teachers and other caregivers, I was able to provide the best quality care for him and implemented a healthy daily routine. This consistency over an extended period encouraged intellectual growth, while increasing his mobility and stamina, which gave his parents a more positive outlook on his abilities, with a condition that had been diagnosed as degenerative.
Prior to this, I worked as a disability support worker at Children’s Disability Center in Enfield, for 8 years, with children from 4-18 years of age, expanding my knowledge of a wide range of physical, developmental, social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. I received ongoing training, which furthered my understanding of a range of syndromes, and ways to cope with challenging behaviors.
