Full-time Caregiver
I recently moved to the Pensacola area from Texas. In Texas, I was an Adapted P E. teacher for 4 years. I worked with children with many types of special needs in a physical education setting ages kindergarten through high school. I worked with my students in an inclusion setting with non-disabled peers and sometimes with only other students with disabilities. I have worked with students with Down's syndrome, Fragile X, Autism, and other intellectual disabilities. I also worked with students that were in wheelchairs, used crutches or used walkers to ambulate. The job was physically demanding but it was very rewarding. I enjoyed seeing my students grow physically, emotionally and socially through adapted P.E.
Parts of my job that were more technical or administrative were as follows:
* Develop and implement IEP goals for students with disabilities in order to ensure safe and successful physical education opportunities
* Teach students skills that help increase their motor-skills and motor-planning
* Create opportunities for physical, emotional, mental and social growth in an inclusion setting
* Collaborate with other teachers, therapists, administrators, parents, and paraprofessionals daily
* Plan and lead athletes through Special Olympic practices throughout the school year
* Document daily on student progress. Report every 9 weeks on progress.
When I moved to Pensacola, I took a job as a teaching assistant. I helped students with learning disabilities in math classes at Woodham Middle School. I also assisted students in art classes and some other academic classes.
Since being in the Pensacola area, I have also volunteered with Autism Pensacola, Inc. I often babysit at their monthly meetings.
