I am a mature and educated woman with an aptitude for working with the elderly and disabled, a role in which my parents were a strong influence. I have worked with individuals impaired as the result of a stroke, dementia or as severe as ALS in the privacy of their own homes as well as skilled nursing facility and hospice. I have been a volunteer for the Long Island State Veteran's Home, I volunteered my time in the capacity of Resident Support. Essentially, my position was to provide companionship, conversation and anything in the realm of possibility to brighten up the day of a resident in this nursing facility. My most recent experience has been in paid private care at the Veteran(s) Home and unfortunately, ultimately in Hospice Care in East Northport. My father, was a veteran of the Air Force and was the impetus and driving factor for me to want to spend time at the Veteran's home. My younger son, a Corporal in the Marines and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan continues to inspire me to continue to work with people of all ages in need of an extra pair of hands and a caring nature. Until recently, I had the privilege to expand my role as a daughter in aiding my bilateral amputee father with many aspects of his activities of daily living. Dad lived with the family for his last five wonderful years. I drove my father to appointments, medical as well as social. I prepared his meals, tidied up where need be. I would help him with making transfers from his wheelchair to car. We enjoyed theater, outdoor excursions, discussions on current events playing with dad's service dog and a passion for reading. I admired his upbeat attitude. He taught me that when life deals you with lemons, you make lemonade. In turn, I believe that our mutual respect for each other allowed us to capitalize on the most positive aspects of our relationship as father/daughter. I know that he touched my life profoundly and I enriched his as well. A lesson to be learned, that we can choose to deal with our challenges and live life to its fullest.
