Who We Are
Jessica Leigh Austin
I am a Florida native born in the panhandle and raised in Pinellas County. My love for animals was evident at a very early age. I began competative horseback riding at the age of 9 and just fell in love! In high school I was fortunate to take the Small & Large Anical Care classes offered at the Seminole Vocational Education Center and at Tarpon High for three full years. We studied everything from Ag-Business, Small and Large Animal Anatomy & Physyology, Health and Disease to farm matinence. A dailiy part of our class was the hands on care of cows, sheet, goats, rabbits, birds, pigs, horses and other small mammals. It was of course my favorite class in school!
I have contunited riding ever since then, however I left the show ring out of high school. I currently am blessed with a wonderful Weimaraner named Geist, pictured with me below. Geist turned three in February and keeps a smile on my face everyday! Weimaraners are very active dogs, bred to be hunters in the field much of the day, they require lots of exercise to keep their minds balanced. Providing what Geist needs keeps me active and him well behaved and with out vices.
With well over a decade in animal interaction and care I take a very simple approach. "There are No Problem Pets, Just Problem Owners" Now, that is not to say there are not some extreme cases of animal behavior that may not be changed through care. These cases, though rare, are very real and in many cases; VERY DANGEROUS.
It is a belief that in order to be the type of pet owner that our pets deserve, we need to understand them. In the case of dogs, different breeds were designed for differnet purposes or tempermants. Each breed comes with its own basic needs and personality which is then added to by the specific needs and personality of the individual dog.
As I stated I have a particular breed of dog, a Weimaraner, that was bred to hunt all day, that means he REQUIRES higher levels of activity provided by me to keep his mind balanced. If he does not ge the physical outlet he needs, he will go "stir crazy." Chewing, pacing, getting into things, running around and jumping on people out of over contained excitement... the list could go on and on.
Simply leaving him in the back yard does not provide what he needs. A 30 minute leash walk twice a day just about covers it. A once a week trip to a wide open space where he can fully cut loose puts him in "doggy nirvana"
Most behavior issues I see come from the unstimulated mind. This is true of dogs, birds and horses especially.
I strive to provide what the mind and body need, and in turn see a happier, more well behaved pet.
After all, I like my shoes with out teeth holes!
