The mission of K & K Family Child Care is to provide comfortable, secure, and nurturing quality child care, and encourage and support children as they expand their knowledge in each domain of learning (social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and moral) by maintaining a safe, high-quality environment staffed by a highly qualified provider; and to reconnect children with nature by playing and learning outside.
Thank you for your interest in K & K Family Child Care! I, Kristol Unterseher, have been a licensed child care provider in the State of Wisconsin since 2001. K & K was formed in 2001 between myself and my best friend, Kelly Walsh, in Madison, WI. In 2002, the child care moved to my home in Madison and I became the sole-proprietor. In 2018, K & K moved to Verona and became a Limited Liability Company, with myself as the sole owner.
I long ago completed the required forty hours of licensing coursework and I continue to meet standards for state licensing, including training, discipline, hygiene, safety, nutrition, program activities and keeping the policies of K & K Family Child Care. I am and will remain certified in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. I have completed over 500 hours of child care coursework, including the following courses: Infant/Toddler, Skills & Strategies for the Child Care Teacher, Guiding Children's Behavior, Center Director, and the annual Launching Into Literacy and Math early childhood education conferences. In 2008, I started a Child Care Mentorship Program for teenagers interested in early childhood education. In 2009, I completed the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Credential Program for Child Care Administrators. I am a member of 4-C (Community Coordinated Child Care) and a participant in their Food Program. I continue to take courses relating to children in order to better my knowledge and understanding of children, above and beyond the fifteen hours per year of continuing education required by state licensing.
A group size will be maintained that does not exceed State Licensing Standards (which the parent is encouraged to review). The license certificate and results of the latest monitoring visit will always be posted.
Among other things, I provide Huggies diapers and wipes, Gerber baby food, Parents' Choice infant formula, and nutritious meals.

I would not recommend this daycare. I found out my baby was sleeping in a mechanical closet without any windows, cement floor, completely unfinished room. Kristol did not ask me if this was something I would be okay with before hand and I also cant imagine that this is up to code with the state (She is a licensed daycare). I was told he would be sleeping in a bedroom off of the main room. She also pushed me to feed my baby rice cereal 2x a day because she gets reimbursed by the state if she feeds kids certain meals, when I wanted to bring my own purees.. I am writing this because I wish I would have known this before sending my baby to her.

I apologize that it has taken me so long to see this review and respond to it! I am saddened to hear that you feel you had a bad experience at my child care. It sounds like your two main concerns were your child sleeping in the spare room and eating rice cereal.
The room in which the child was sleeping is indeed part of the child care's licensed space. It is not a "mechanical closet," but a 13x15 spare room (with rugs) which I usually use as additional storage space, but have occasionally used for nap time when a child who sleeps in a pack-n-play has difficulty sleeping in the rooms with windows. Your child in particular slept best with more darkness and white noise. Also, I no longer use that space for nap time.
K & K participates in the Child and Adult Care Food Program, a Federal program that provides reimbursement for serving healthy meals and snacks to children in child care. Home providers participating in this program must follow meal requirements established by the USDA. The USDA Infant Meal Pattern:
~Breakfast and Lunch: Iron-Fortified Infant Formula (IFIF) OR Breastmilk; and when developmentally ready, Iron-Fortified Infant Cereal (IFIC) and Fruit and/or Vegetable puree.
~Snack: IFIF or Breastmilk
Even when an infant is developmentally ready to eat table foods, K & K is still required to follow the infant meal pattern until the child is past one year of age. This includes IFIF at each meal and IFIC for breakfast and lunch. It is and has always been perfectly acceptable for parents to bring their own baby food to K & K, but all meal requirements must still be met. Any deviation from the infant meal pattern requires a letter signed by the child's medical authority. This includes any food allergy the child may have that eliminates a required meal component.
Rice IFIC is a good first solid food because it is easy to digest and contains the iron that infants need for proper growth and development. Iron helps blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. If infants do not get enough iron, it can delay their growth and development. Babies begin losing iron after birth and have a significantly lower amount by the time they are six months of age. For breastfed babies, it's especially important to introduce IFIC when the baby is ready to eat solid foods because it provides iron and zinc that babies need as they grow.

How much do I love this daycare? Well, Kristol, who runs it, is amazing. She's been such a resource to me as I've parented my high-energy first child. My daughter adores her, to the point of wanting to sit in her lap instead of mine when we've run into each other at community events. Kristol somehow manages to both get my strong-willed child to do things like nap, eat all her food, and learn to do good habits like cleaning up while still being loving and encouraging empathy. Back when we could go out in public (this review is written in the middle of the COVID pandemic), people used to give me SO many compliments on my child's good manners, and which was rather embarrassing as I knew the majority of the credit went to Kristol.
I was initially worried that the small group size would be unstimulating, but I've found that instead, my daughter has made deep friendships, and not just with kids of her own age. Because Kristol's care is out of her home, she's also got helpful hours for working parents and is open during weather and other events that close most bigger preschools (I once pulled my kid to her on a sled because I needed to work from home after a snowstorm!) When COVID struck, we pulled my daughter out to protect vulnerable family members, and she's been asking when she can go back frequently.
Kristol has been in the business for over 20 years and is fully accredited, certified, etc., so you really get the best of all worlds in terms of high-quality professional care at a much more affordable price than most of the high-quality big preschools in our area.
If you're wondering what brings on this infomercial, I'm getting absolutely nothing out of posting this except for not feeling so guilty for having to pull my kid out, because my hours were slashed at work. If/when I can afford to have childcare, I will be coming back to Kristol and crossing my fingers there is an opening, (and if we ever have a 2nd child, I'll be texting Kristol to get on the waitlist about a minute after I see the positive pregnancy test).

Our family was extremely happy to have our daughter in Kristol's care from infancy through kindergarten. Kristol and her family felt like a part of our family. Our daughter was safe, happy, nutured, and learning throughout her day. The empathy, understanding, and care for others our daughter shows were greatly influenced by the five years she spent in Kristol's care. You will not be disappointed in choosing K&K Family Childcare for your child!

We feel really blessed to have had our son at K and K family child care. He loved going there and always enjoyed playing with his friends. He never cried at drop offs! Kristol is very professional, kind, caring, and disciplined. If you are looking for somewhere your child will be taken care of, this is place to go. We had no worries about how our son was doing; he played but still learnt a couple of things...how to share, clean-up etc.

We highly recommend K & K Family Child Care. If you are looking for a loving in-home day care for your child, K & K is the place. Kristol provides a friendly, nurturing environment for the children. She is trustworthy, kind, professional and organized; in short she is exactly the type of person you would want to watch your kids. We have been highly satisfied with the care she has provided our daughter over the past 18 months.
