I have worked in group homes, helping to care for individuals with behavioral challenges, physical disabilities, mental and cognitive impairment. Whether it was autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, seizures or other challenges, I was always amazed at how the individuals coped and my heart went out to not only them but members of their support system who were right there with them. So if I can help to make even a second of a difference in the lives of these individuals and their loved ones, then it is worth it. If I have to spend hours to see a smile, a hint of recognition, a step or some achievement, then I know I am doing something right. It is a privilege and honor to be able to serve the special needs community, it helps to remind me to be grateful for all the abilities we sometimes take for granted and humble me when I see these individuals overcome so much despite their challenges.
