I have worked in the early childhood field for 18 years. This has covered a vast array of experiences, from owning my own child care facility, working in traditional and non-tradition child care, to working as a respite care worker and nanny. I am presently on call for a family that I have been a nanny for two years. Their son was 3 when I started with the family, that was 10 years ago. The child that I was working with has Autism. I provided routines and a safe environment both in and at of the home. I transported him to speech and physical therapy where I observed. I gained the knowledge that it took to work with him through therapy and volunteering at his pre-school. I soon implemented applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy program at his home and worked with him every day. I also recently worked as a nanny from March 2006 to December 2006. I cared for two children ages 8 months and 4 years. I transported the children to doctor's appointments and was proactive in the children's food allergies (8-month-old) and asthma (4-year-old). Through this family, I learned how to use an inhaler, nebulizer and medications, both traditional and non-traditional medication. I volunteered at an Elementary school to care for children ages 3 to 5 years. I assisted in the integrated preschool. I observed the speech and physical therapist to gain further knowledge to help me understand Autism better. I volunteered at a High School where I supervised children/adults, 16 to 21 years, who have disabilities. I guided students with computer literacy, life skills, building self esteem, job searches, college enrollment and assisted teachers. I also volunteered with my peers who have disabilities while I attended high school in 1986.
