There is no such thing as a "math person." As someone who did math competitively from 5th-11th grade, I can say with surety that math, like any skill, is one in which anyone can grow given the right tools and foundations. Here are my principles: 1) Anyone can learn math. We may go at different paces, but we can all learn. Our brains are oriented towards sensing patterns, and math is simply a language through which these patterns are described. 2) Frustration is a normal and resolvable experience. Learning can be difficult and uncomfortable when our brains are stretching in new ways. However, navigating this frustration helps us become more attuned, resilient, and capable learners. Preventing long-term discouragement is critical, so that students can continue to master the fundamentals. Without this, many students find it increasingly difficult as they continue through school. I look forward to helping your learner recognize the joy of math and bring forth their innate talents.
