Working alongside Sophie, I got to know how kindhearted and selfless she is. We worked together at a small home school, with kids who came to us because they do not function well in the public school system. We had some kids that I found difficult to work with. Not explicitly, rather through her actions, Sophie consistently reminded me that when we weren't receiving respect from students, our job was never to demand respect, but to first understand why the student felt so uncomfortable that they needed to resort to disrespect. She instilled this "understanding first" attitude in every one of her coworkers, veteran and novice caregiver alike. Working alongside someone like Sophie helps remind you why you do what you do.
