I recently graduated from the University of Arizona with my bachelor's degree, majoring in psychology and minoring in special education. While in college I had an internship with Project Focus, a program on campus for students with varying intellectual and developmental disabilities. I worked as a Peer Mentor, so my job was to work alongside the students in classrooms, working on coursework, and enjoying campus life activities. Our main objective was to give these students the full college experience, they may not have been able to have on their own. Through my time at Project Focus I was able to learn how to interact one on one with teens and young adults who learned, acted, and reacted to situations a little bit differently than the majority of college students. Project Focus instilled a real passion for inclusion, universal design, and acceptance of everyone, no matter their intellectual or physical abilities, in me.
