Hi! I've been a caregiver for a few years and here are a few things I've learned over the years.. Don't treat it like any other job. If you don't connect with the residents/clients or have compassion for the elderly then you will hate this job. I love seeing smiles on their faces when I get them a cup of coffee or even helping them get cleaned up. I love being helpful. Be patient with the residents and also their families. No one wants to be in a situation where they watch their loved one slowly lose their independence. Sometimes residents will refuse something that is good for them, such as a shower. Just be patient and try again in 20 minutes." staying calm will be the most beneficial at the end of the day. Take everything with a grain of salt. Sometimes the elderly act out of character and say some pretty wild things. Roll with the punches. Come with a smile on your face. There's nothing that the residents love more than seeing a smile and a good attitude.
