I have worked for over 10 years in school and home settings as a teacher, home support aide, community aide, and friend and mentor to teenagers and young adults with physical, developmental, and neurodivergent challenges. Specifically, I have many years of experience working with communication and social and language development with those on the Autism Spectrum, in their homes and in the community. I find kinship in Martha Nussbaum's Capability Approach to interpreting human thriving. The basic premise of the approach is that the freedom to achieve human thriving is a social necessity and democratic contract, a matter of what each individual person is able to do and be, and that each person deserves the dignity and freedom of the specific, individual conditions required for personhood and thriving.
