The caring for seniors is really a very rewarding experience; it calls for a great deal of patience and compassion. Assistance with daily activities is done each day, along with medication management and emotional support. Trust must be built; this is where listening to all their stories becomes very important, as there are lessons to learn from their experiences. Yes, there are times of frustration, especially around navigating health problems, but again, rewards are great. Sometimes, it is just a smile or sharing an act of humor that may be enjoyed and worth relating to. They find occasion to celebrate small victories, like finishing a meal or taking a walk outside, for a sense of accomplishment. The experience has greatly heightened my sensitivity and knowledge but also my appreciation for the wisdom and resilience of older generations.
