My spouse had difficulties connecting with people due to her having Alzheimer's and a severe stroke that impacted the language area of her brain. Melissa was able to bridge that reluctance to talk or interact with others. She brought fun through her own sense of humor, and the return of a smile once in awhile because she {Melissa} smiled and talked and held a hand or gave a back rub. They had some serious discussions regarding limitations in walking and how not to fall so often vs. the need for some independence, or the need for my spouse to take her medications when they were offered. Melissa brought the real world into our house by interacting with my loved one; she didn't just 'dump' her in front of TV. I knew my spouse was well cared for while I was out running errands, and that any light house keeping task was completed by the time I returned. The dog loved Melissa too.
