Those of us who already speak, read, and write English may take it for granted; however, English is one of the most difficult languages to learn. While I was in college, I helped pay for my tuition by tutoring elementary and middle school students. More recently, I have been teaching my adopted son the English language from scratch! (I adopted him from China 9 years ago and he has a profound hearing impairment.) I am also fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and have experience working with children who have special needs, including non-verbal children. It is so heart-warming to see children become excited about learning when they start understanding instead of just going through the motions!
