Margie tutored my young adult autistic son just as he entered community college. He was accustomed to having a para-educator with him throughout his PreK-12 years, and suddenly, he was on his own, with inadequate organization, planning, pacing, and self-advocacy skills. Margie saved his college career and changed his outlook from fearful to confident. She experimented with different ways to represent his weekly plan until she found one that he could easily follow on his own. She identified tasks he could do without assistance and held him responsible for them. She observed how he learned and incorporated alternative learning materials that worked far better than reading a textbook. She treated him as a young adult and pushed him to do what he was capable of, including politely contacting his professors for class materials and grades. Although he still needs help and monitoring, I am 100% sure that he would not have been successful without Margie's amazing skills at organizing and dealing with young adults. Had he not moved away, I would continue to hire Margie as his tutor.
