I have had 150+ hours of volunteer experience in my churches special needs department on Sunday's and Wednesday's. And I eventually transitioned to working for the church and being on pay roll for 4 years I was in high and part of college. I also grew up with a younger brother who has autism, so I definitely have at home hands on experience with special needs children. I also nannied for a family with a child who was diagnosed with Coffin Siris, a rare genetic/developmental disorder. The child is nonverbal, and used a communication device to read off of and communicate with us. She did communicate with sign language as well but it was minimal. She also had trouble with motor functions, so I assisted her with eating, bathing, brushing teeth, and clothing. I cared for her since she was 2 1/2 years old until she was 6 1/2 years old.
