Maria S. is so much more that what you will read on her care.com profile. I know this because Maria S has worked 12 and a half years for my family. I first meet Maria S. when she was caring for my sister in law’s vivacious grandmother. Maria S. cared for her for 10 years, until her death. During those years the house was filled with joy, security and order. When my father required in-home personal care due to dementia, we knew that Maria’s skills and professionalism made her the ideal person to care for him. Maria S. worked 12-hour shifts with my father for 2 and a half years and only missed one week due to Covid. It is difficult to explain the ever-changing needs and situations that a caregiver must navigate each day when providing end of life care or caring for someone with dementia. For my father, the day could start with a sense of joy as he filled the birdfeeder and then headed out for a car ride, yet that same day he could find himself in a panic because of unfamiliar surroundings or frustrated because he could not articulate or remember something very basic. My father trusted and depended on Maria S. during these difficult moments due to her calm demeanor and confidence. Maria’s experience also guided us as a family to better understand strategies to handle my father’s decline. As part of her duties, Maria S. dispensed and managed my father’s medication and was on the line during phone calls with his doctors. As an example of her diligence, on two different occasions, Maria S. recognized that my father was having a bad reaction to new medications. As a result of her actions, my father’s prescriptions were changed to drugs that did not adversely affect him. Maria S. excels in all aspects of her caregiving. She is an effective communicator, she keeped me informed on a timely basis and I can say, without hesitation, that her compassion and professional expertise has been invaluable to my family. My father has passed away and I know his last years were much happier by having Maria S in his life. Maria S. has continued her education as a caregiver and is now a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
