Margaret has been my personal live-in caregiver since March of 2012 and I can honestly say that hiring her was one of the best decisions of my post-MS life. As someone with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, I have been fiercely fighting to maintain my independence as things have rapidly degenerated over the past 4 years. Unfortunately my definition of "independence" currently means nothing more than living 5 hours away from my parents and working as a teacher in Baltimore city. Neither of these would have been possible without Margaret. I am fully dependent on a caregiver to help me with things as simple as washing my own face or feeding myself. Margaret's strength as a caregiver impresses me on a daily basis: she is not only able to transfer me in and out of bed, from my manual wheelchair to my power chair, on and off the toilet and in and out of the shower with (what seems like) ease, she regularly infuses my life with encouragement and exemplifies integrity on a daily basis. In addition to assisting me with almost 100% of my ADLs, she has also shown a remarkable willingness to learn things that she had no prior experience with: she has helped me with makeup application on a daily basis despite the fact that she has never applied makeup to herself, and has even shown promise as a hairstylist (I am still surprisingly concerned with appearances despite the fact that I cannot do any grooming on my own!). Margaret is truly a rare example of someone who always does the right thing merely because she holds herself to that high of a standard.
