Once I graduated high school, I began working for Easter Seals Child Development Center -- a facility largely based around children with special needs. In addition to being a teacher, I was a personal care-aide for a young boy with autism, global delays, and sensory processing disorder. I accompanied him to his various therapies, assisted him during classroom activities, and completed activities that enhanced his fine motor skills. My student was non-verbal, so we worked on signing and other means of communication. More recently, I lived with one child who has autism and is non verbal, one child with sensory processing disorder and global delays, and one child who is neurotypical -- all under the age of five -- full time for close to six months. I have experience working and caring for an individual with special needs one on one and in a larger/group setting. I am not fluent in ASL, but I do know most basic "children" signs; and I am always learning!
