Where do I even begin? She interviewed so well, and during the process, I let her know that if she ever felt the job was too much, overwhelming, or if we weren’t a good fit, she should let us know and give us at least 30-60 days’ notice to find another nanny. She agreed, so we decided to move forward and made her an offer. Everything looked great on paper. Granted, it was her first day, and I have a 3-year-old who is shy, quiet, and calm, especially when meeting someone new. It takes her some time to feel comfortable, which is completely normal. I started the day by showing the nanny what we typically do on a day-to-day basis. Not once did she offer to step in and help. While I understand that I was showing her the routine, I would have expected her to take some initiative. When my 1-year-old woke up, she left the room, expecting me to attend to the baby (major red flag). If I’m showing her the ropes, why would she just leave the room? I didn’t say much and continued to explain what needed to be done. I cooked breakfast and showed her what my kids typically eat. My children aren’t picky eaters. I also showed her my 3-year-old’s activities and how we teach her. However, she seemed disengaged the entire time. When it was time for lunch and my 1-year-old’s nap, she once again stayed out of the room. I even asked if she wanted to come in to see how I put my child down for a nap. She didn’t respond and just stayed with my 3-year-old. I cooked lunch again, and she still didn’t take any initiative. Later, I had to take a quick call, and during that time, my daughter came to me, saying she was still hungry and wanted more food. Then the nanny informed me that her time was up, which completely shocked me. I simply said, “Okay, bye. Have a good one and stay safe.” Later that day, she texted me, saying the job wasn’t a good fit for her, she felt uncomfortable, and she wanted to get paid. I responded by pointing out that she was basing her decision on just one day and asked her to reconsider. However, after speaking with my husband, something felt off, and we decided not to push further. I reminded her of the agreement for a 30-60 day notice and told her it was unfortunate that she was backing out so quickly. I also mentioned that I wouldn’t want someone taking care of my children who didn’t genuinely want to be there. That’s when she became disrespectful, rude, and even called me names. She also made disparaging comments about my kids and my home, which was completely uncalled for. She revealed her true colors during this exchange, and I have text messages to prove her behavior. Do yourself a favor and don’t hire her. She was extremely immature and unprofessional throughout the entire situation. Not once did I disrespect her, so there was no reason for her to respond the way she did. This should come as no surprise to her, as I told her I would report her behavior.
