I have over 45 years of experience caring for pets, my family are all pet lovers. When my children were growing up we had everything, cats, dogs, iguanas, snakes, chinchillas, ferrets, mice, guinea pigs, gerbils, spiders, hermit crabs, love birds, canaries, parrots, well I might have forgotten some:) My husband and I still have a canary, two cats, a shih tzu and a half Staffordshire mix that one of my sons rescued when he was attending Texas State. Her name is Maya and she is one of the gentlest dogs we have ever owned, loyal, obedient and loving. I have always allowed any type of pet in our home as long as I knew my children were going to be responsible pet owners, and they were. Now that they are grown, they still are.
