Period of service to my wife – 10 months October 2023 through July 2024 Reason for care – My wife has dementia. Primarily Alzheimer’s with some frontal temporal increasingly evident. Libby made it possible for my wife to stay at home an additional 10 months. Libby became part of our family. For my wife they became best friends, extending my wife’s joy in doing “girlfriend” things such as shopping, going to see movies, getting a Gail a manicure, something she never did. These activities kept her dementia brain alert and challenged. Libby used games and puzzles as another activity to promote brain activity. As a family, we did things together. I am a musician and Gail liked to come listen to me perform. With advancing dementia, Gail could not be left alone safely, so Libby accompanied us to assist in any personal issues that needed to be addressed. She often prepared meals for us, so that the only thing I had to be concerned about is Gail’s safety and wellbeing. When I had an important event to attend out of town, Libby stayed with Gail for 6 days. This took skills sets in understanding dementia because Gail, as with most dementia patients, cannot see that she has the disease. So, she did not understand why someone had to stray with her. The devotion, care and love that Libby showed Gail is above and beyond what you would expect from the typical agency caregiver. She truly became part of our family, and I look back now at that period in our life, as a beautiful experience extending Gail’s quality of life and extending the quality of our life together. There is only one Libby!
